PROGRESS-how do we measure it

PROGRESS- If we are going to FIX THE PLANET we have to make some progress and also have a way to measure it. This is a pretty tall order.

We can see how the Al Gore CO2 measurements are coming. This takes time but is a very good indicator.

We can check the EPA air quality readings. They have done this in the greater Phoenix are and we have failed 6 years in a row. They did say it was closer to not failing last time ,but still failing is failing.

People who refuse green

I'm tired of MOST people being against going green. What can we say to them to convince them there is a problem with the earth's future? They laugh at me, calling me tree hugger, for trying to go green. MOST people around here refuse to recycle, even though the county gave everyone a free recycle bin and they pick up every week.

Clean Coal Power

Greenpeace says it has legal advice that the words 'clean coal' are deliberately misleading and could be in breach of the Trade Practices Act.

Greenpeace has lodged a complaint with the ACCC and energy campaigner Mark Wakeham says the use of the term potentially distracts consumers from the real solutions to climate change.

Clean Coal Power

World prices for thermal coal, used in power stations, are likely to rise sharply in the next few years as China becomes a net importer of the fuel earlier than expected, says Mineweb. European coal prices have already risen to about $70 a tonne from $52 at the end of 2005, it adds. This should benefit mining companies such as Xstrata, Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton. Meanwhile China’s rush to produce the coal it needs from its own ramshackle mines is having tragic consequences.

Clean Coal Power

One of the first used forms of alternative was wind energy. Many countries have developed wind farms, both off shore and mainland wind farms. Turbines are turned by wind, creating a viable renewable energy source. The problem with wind energy is that turbines can’t be located near housing districts because of the noise they create, although with further research and investment technologies associated with wind energy and wind turbines will undoubtedly keep improving.

Clean coal Companies

However, as the demand for coal increases, so the development of
"clean coal" technology, an environmentally safe use for coal. They put their faith in a technology that gasifies the coal before
burning. Such plants are designed, they say, to be more adaptable to
separating the carbon and storing it underground."

Presidential GREENESS

It will be very interesting to see just what new policy and programs the President starts in 2009.

Just not over ruling exisiting federal environmental standards will be a big step. The clean air and water acts have been ignored for over 30 years. Stopping subsidizes to oil, fossil fuel and nuclear will also be a big step.

Maybe we all can post any new GREEN news we see from Washington. I expect good things but we all must also do our part. It's up to all of us to make a difference everyday.

Where are recycled products sourced?

Hi All- my first post-need your opinions re:does it matter that when you purchase a recycled product that the recycled materials used are NOT sourced in the United States and we are cleaning up other countries recycled waste? Also we all are aware that US materials are shipped overseas manufactured then shipped back. Does not seem like this really addresses our Green initiatives: increases the CO2 footprint and does not really assist in our clean up efforts or keeping jobs right here?

Thanks for your comments-Deborah
