Eco Proof Your House for the Winter

In our generally speaking less than sunny climate, we in the UK have come to depend on central heating systems to get us through the cruel winter months. Imagine where we would be without boilers, having to go through what feels like the majority of the year with an unpleasant, sniffley cold. You could safely say that radiators are essential to our comfort.

Unfortunately, however, central heating is an area which can contribute immensely both to the gas bill and to the state of the environment. It follows that the more natural gas that is consumed in order to provide everyone with a comfortably warm home, the greater the quantity of greenhouse gases flooding the atmosphere will be. There are, fortunately, ways by which you can avoid paying through the nose and irrevocably damaging our planet.

The range of heating appliances offered by UK energy supplier British Gas almost all come with an option for electrical energy as opposed to natural gas, or a combination of the two, which makes for a cleaner central heating system. British Gas offer radiators of all shapes and sizes on their site – these are constructed by engineers in order to be as energy efficient as possible, meaning that neither your bank account nor the environment will be damaged as much as they have been in the past by inefficient household appliances.

Furthermore, there are a number of ways by which the customer can ensure that his or her radiators and central heating perform to the best possible level of excellence. Over time, sludge and other such residue builds up in the pipes of your home, reducing the power your radiator has, and it’s really important that this gets cleaned out every once in a while. A system called PowerCleanse, included for free by British Gas with every boiler installation, ensures that all the gunk is removed from the pipe system leaving you with a far more clean, energy efficient structure.

Another fantastic way to conserve energy, and consequently money, is by making sure that your house is properly insulated. Wall cavity and loft insulation can cost around £250 each, which may sound like an unnecessarily large expenditure; but when you bear in mind that you will save around £350 per year in the gas that you won’t need, it soon balances out in your favour.
