Hedging against a recession.

Forum topic seemed apropos,

CtYankee and Athena this is aimed specifically at the two of you. I humbley ask about your opinions concerning the imminent recession the U.S. is facing. I am concerned about my families welfare in the furure. The way this economy is shaping up, I am contemplating what actions I should take to hedge against what is coming down the pike and would like to hear some input from a couple of greener intellects.

I agree about naked shorts, although technically it is not illegal, to me it is unethical. I don't get that deep, just buy and sell. I believe if I was in it for the MONEY, I would have no hair on my head be the proud father of a couple of ulcers and be self medicating myself to sleep at night. I am not in it for the money, well,....... I guess I can't say that! Small gains are fine by me, as long as I am beating bonds and mutuals I am fine. Yes, "cashed" out, except I wouldn't exactly call it cash, "pennies" is more apropo. I am out for now, no guts! Don't want to lose what I have set aside for kids and wife in case I bite the Big One, know what I mean, Vern?

To make matters worse, the "little woman" is a mobile loan closer and with the sub prime catastrophy this household has been shaken at the foundations and is still settling, waitin' for the dust to clear!

What was the exact opening drop -450 something this AM???

I'm not a DOW watcher, but it sure sets the tone for the day!

I'm ready to get back into that fray right-now just-yet.  The Dollar
Cost Average shares are once again having their day in the sun... that's OK
too.

Did ya' re-balance the portfolio, of just convert it all to cash?

Look on the other thread... jstack posted an Evergreen Solar chart that's live... they took another beating...  I like ESLR, I like the guys there.  I hate it when they get a raw deal in the market.  I hate "naked short" sellers... they stole a lot of my gains.

Happy to report, put in a sell after careful deliberation and calculation. After this mornings whoop de do, I'm glad I listened to my gut. Thanks you guys, for the input. Detraction and abstraction for some reason gets my thought capabilities back on track. Came out of it a little scratched, but not bruised up. Phwooo.....

If everyone thought like you, there would not be a problem - something like -  "Judge them by their fruits"   except, the judging of the individual is going to be done by the individual himself. I think you will be fine.  Don't bother with the pickled beets. - You would only give them away to the first bum who comes to the door.

See, now that's what I needed. A little comic relief to bring a smile to my worry wrinkled face and the sun seems brighter already. Like I said, I am probably reading too much into this economic booster shot.

... It took me the better part of an hour to come up with that...

While I appreciate the vote of confidence, I'm a bit embarrasses to say I haven't got the slightest of what to recommend, because I don't know your current situation or needs.

The good news is that if you're already living below your means then you've  taken the hardest step towards minimizing the down side.  The sad part is that all the bloody idiots that got us here in the first place will get the relief they most certainly do not deserve.

 I love a hot and heavy political debate... or a heavy session on economics.  But right now:[Gump] "That's all I have to say about that." [/Gump]

Yuck,,, Pickled beets, I detest pickled beets...... on the other hand if it were pickled heart, well sir, that is a bird of a different feather.

I have some money tied up in the market and have seen some losses as of late. I don't know, maybe I'm just getting worked up over the small stuff.

Thought maybe you could offer some insight. Please don't get me started about "the Hill" because I'm am about to start a one man coup d'e-tat. Oh boy, what did I just type, take that and stuff it down your Patriot Act! See, there I go.
