Got to be a better way....

Billy345

I'm all for the notion of Desal but after reading this, I think there has got to be a better way...

"...Enormous amounts of seawater are desalted everyday worldwide. The total
world production of fresh water from the sea is about 2621 mgd (9.92
million m3 day-1 1985 figures). Desalting
processes are normally associated with the rejection of high
concentration waste brine from the plant itself or from the
pretreatment units as well as during the cleaning period. In thermal
processes, mainly multistage flash (MSF) thermal pollution occurs.
These pollutants increase the seawater temperature, salinity, water
current and turbidity. They also harm the marine environment, causing
fish to migrate while enhancing the presence of algae, nematods and
tiny molluscus. Sometimes micro-elements and toxic materials appear in
the discharged brine..."

I'm not sure I understand your reply....I appreciate the info from The Solar Stacks as always...

I wasn't sure I understood the post? Was it a question or a short manifesto by some unknown source.  The points made were ambiguous at best, typically unverifyable, and inflammatory at worst.

Sure, jstack says conserve, that's *always* sound advice, how could I or any rational person disagree? But the reality is that it occasionally makes more sense to desalinate water than to try to transport fresh water to the points where it's needed.  What's a person to do?

Re: Got to be a better way....

I agree, Desalination causes as many problems as it tries to solve. There is a better way, in fact many.

1- Don't use so much water. We have a new front load washer that uses 3 gallons per load instead of 30. Things come out even cleaner.

2- Use bio degradable soaps. Non phasphate soap leave water useable for plants etc.

3- Don't pollute water or let big industried pollute and get away with it. After the big oil spills like the exxon Valdez and many others , the oil companies fight and don't clean up. The tax payers have to clean up and carry the cost. This is crazy.

4- Use renewable energy, at home or from your power company. Old power plants use lots of water that they heat and make power. They also pollute the water. Oil, natural gas, and coal use a lot (1 gallon per kilowatt hour) and nuclear used 50% more.

Wind and solar PV don't use any water or make any pollution. Oh you have a little when they are made but then 50 years of no fuel spills or leaks and no water use !

5- Eat lower on the food chain, Yes that means more vegtables and fruit. Animal raising and feeding takes 10 times more power and 100 times more water. !!!

Even if you can't stop killing animals and eating them at least cut down. It's not hard and once you do we will all be better for it.
